About Cognition AI

American developer of the Devin AI coding agent, which automates software development. In May 2026 the company raised $1B at a $26B valuation led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC. Annual recurring revenue reached about $492M.

Cognition builds Devin — a software engineer that works not through prompts in an editor but on its own: it takes a task in plain words, works through an unfamiliar codebase itself, writes and runs code, tests it, and submits a finished change for a human to review. The company was founded in 2023. The fundamental difference from familiar assistants is that responsibility for the result sits with the system, not with a human finishing a line behind the tool. Annual revenue went from $73M in June 2025 to $492M in May 2026. In June 2026 the company announced a productivity guarantee: if Devin delivers less value than it was paid, the company covers the usage itself — up to $10M a year. Valued at $26B in a Series D (May 2026, $125.93 per share); roughly $1.6B raised.

Key highlights

  1. Revenue grew 6.7x in eleven months, and this is not a one-off deal. Annual revenue went from $73M in June 2025 to $492M in May 2026.
  2. The company removed the main barrier to enterprise purchase — distrust of the result. In June 2026 it announced a productivity guarantee: if Devin delivers less engineering value than it was paid, Cognition covers the usage at its own expense — up to $10M a year.
  3. In-house models move the economics out of someone else's hands into its own. Until 2026 the company depended on the inference cost of other people's models.
  4. The government sector has opened up — the most closed and slowest market there is. In July 2026 Devin obtained FedRAMP High In-Process status, granting access to the highest category of federal data, and Cognition signed a memorandum with the US Department of Energy on participating in the Genesis Mission program.
  5. The valuation is catching up to the business, not running ahead of it. The Series D came with a 2.5x increase in valuation over eight months, while revenue over the same period grew 6.7x.
