About Shield AI

Developer of autonomous defense aircraft and drones built on the Hivemind AI pilot, which operates without GPS or comms. In March 2026 the company closed a $1.5B Series G (plus $500M of preferred equity from Blackstone) led by Advent International at a $12.7B valuation, double last year's $5.3B.

Shield AI builds Hivemind, a software pilot that flies an aircraft on its own when satellite navigation and communications drop out. Founded in 2015 in San Diego. The company sells it together with its own V-BAT drones and separately, as a license for machines from Northrop Grumman, General Atomics, Kratos, and Airbus. In May 2026 the US Department of Defense included Hivemind in the LUCAS low-cost strike drone program, and in July, together with GE Aerospace, the F110-GE-129E engine with a swiveling nozzle for X-BAT was fired for the first time. Current valuation is $12.7B from a $1.5B Series G (March 2026), against $5.3B a year earlier; roughly $3.3B raised.

Key highlights

  1. The valuation doubled in a year, and the round was not closed by a venture fund. In March 2025 the company was worth $5.3B; in March 2026, $12.7B.
  2. X-BAT has passed the program's riskiest stage. In July 2026, together with GE Aerospace, the F110-GE-129E engine with a swiveling nozzle was fired for the first time on a stand in Peebles, Ohio.
  3. The Pentagon has embedded Hivemind in someone else's mass program. In May 2026 the US Department of Defense included Shield AI's software in the LUCAS low-cost strike drone program to control group behavior.
  4. The money is arriving in exactly the budget line where the company operates. The draft 2027 US defense budget allocates more than $70B to unmanned and counter-drone systems, against $16.5B a year earlier.
  5. The company is reshaping its leadership for the public market. Gary Steele became CEO, having taken Proofpoint public and carried it through to a $12.3B sale, and then served as president of publicly traded Splunk.
