About Stoke Space

Developing Nova — a medium-class rocket with both stages fully reusable, a Falcon 9 competitor. Founded by Blue Origin alumni Andy Lapsa and Tom Feldman.

Stoke Space is an American launch vehicle developer, founded in 2019 by Blue Origin alumni, headquartered in Kent, with about 400 employees. It is building Nova, a medium-class rocket with both stages reusable. The second stage returns from orbit using a metal heat shield that is cooled by liquid hydrogen and doubles as the engine, so there are no fragile tiles to replace after flight. The first orbital launch, Pathfinder, is set for early 2027 from Cape Canaveral; the company is already part of the US Space Force's $17 billion defense launch pool. In September 2026 it raised $1 billion in a Series E at a valuation of about $10 billion, bringing total funding to $2.3 billion across six rounds.

Key highlights

  1. First orbital flight. The Pathfinder launch in early 2027 will be the first in-flight test of the entire design. A successful launch will open access to defense orders and commercial contracts that require a flight track record.
  2. Second-stage recovery. Today every company, including SpaceX with Falcon 9, discards the second stage after flight. If Stoke recovers it intact, the cost of each subsequent launch would drop to fuel and refurbishment expenses.
  3. Nova Block 2 at 15 tons. The enlarged rocket lifts five times more payload, putting it in the same weight class as Falcon 9. It is built on the same tooling in Kent, so the transition requires no new factory.
  4. The $17 billion defense pool. Through 2029, the Space Force will allocate 170 launches among seven companies. Even a modest share of this pool would give Stoke predictable revenue for years to come.
  5. Expanding the test site. The Moses Lake facility is being expanded from 75 to 550 acres with two new test stands. This will allow Pathfinder and Block 2 to be tested in parallel and stages to be sent to launch more often.
  6. Returning cargo from orbit to Earth. The recoverable stage could bring back products from orbital factories and experiment results — a service with almost no existing market. Joint work with NASA on atmospheric reentry is bringing this market closer.
