About Commonwealth Fusion Systems

An MIT spinoff. Building commercial fusion power plants based on a tokamak with high-temperature superconducting magnets. The SPARC device is set to demonstrate net energy gain, to be followed by the commercial ARC plant.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is a US fusion energy company spun out of MIT in 2018, headquartered in Devens. It builds power plants based on the tokamak — a donut-shaped device that confines plasma with a magnetic field. Its key innovation is high-temperature superconducting magnets, which make the reactor several times more compact than earlier designs; a 20-tesla magnet was successfully tested in September 2021. The SPARC demonstration device in Devens is roughly 80% complete and is expected to produce more energy than it consumes for the first time in 2027. It will be followed by the 400 MW ARC plant in Virginia, half of whose output has already been contracted by Google. The company has raised $4 billion in total, with the most recent round — $1 billion — closed in July 2026.

Key highlights

  1. Net energy gain at SPARC. If SPARC produces more energy than it consumes in 2027, CFS will be the first company to demonstrate this on a magnetic confinement device. The device is designed for a tenfold energy gain, giving it headroom above the breakeven threshold.
  2. A fleet of plants after the first ARC. Google holds an option on energy from future plants, and ARC itself repeats SPARC's design. Each new plant is built from a proven design, lowering its cost.
  3. Magnets as a standalone business. The Devens factory is already producing superconducting magnets at scale for SPARC. Selling these magnets to other developers, starting with Realta Fusion, generates revenue well ahead of ARC's launch.
  4. Asia as a second market. Hyundai Motor Group and CFS are exploring building a fusion plant in South Korea, where fusion is a priority technology. Its cap table already includes a Japanese consortium led by Mitsui and Mitsubishi, along with Singapore's Temasek.
  5. In-house fuel for the plants. The UK's UKAEA LIBRTI program, worth £220 million, will test how a plant can breed its own tritium, one of two fuel components. CFS became its first foreign participant and gained access to a powerful neutron source.
  6. Government support. In August 2026, the US Department of Energy credited CFS with two more milestones under its fusion support program, now for the ARC plant. These milestones unlock government co-financing and speed up approvals.
