About Pacific Fusion

Developing pulsed inertial fusion using impedance-matched Marx generators — a path to a demonstration device cheaper than laser- or magnet-based approaches.

Pacific Fusion is an American fusion company, founded in summer 2023 by five co-founders led by Eric Lander, headquartered in Fremont. It is building a device where fuel is compressed by ultra-short electrical pulses from 156 identical, shipping-container-sized modules. There are no lasers or superconducting magnets; the modules are built from steel, aluminum, and capacitors, making them suitable for serial production — assembly takes place in San Leandro and later in Los Lunas. In August 2026, construction began in Albuquerque on a demonstration device that, by 2030, is meant to be the first to output more fusion energy than is stored in the machine. The company has raised more than $1 billion in a Series A led by General Catalyst, disbursed in tranches after each completed technical milestone.

Key highlights

  1. A full-size module in 2026. The next milestone is a module with 32 stages, versus nine in the prototype. Its acceptance will unlock the next Series A tranche and confirm that the remaining 155 modules are simply a matter of repetition.
  2. The first assembly line for a fusion device. Modules are assembled in San Leandro, and later in Los Lunas, New Mexico, like industrial equipment. Serial production lowers the cost of each subsequent module and shortens the construction timeline for future plants.
  3. Defense orders ahead of energy output. A device with output above 100 MJ is needed by the NNSA for nuclear-stockpile research, and no comparable facility is being built elsewhere in the US. Such work can generate revenue years before the first commercial plant.
  4. Paid access to the facility. Starting in 2028, outside users will be able to run experiments on the device's 17 diagnostic channels. Demand exists among satellite manufacturers, materials scientists, and medical-isotope producers.
  5. A cheaper target. In 2026 experiments at Sandia, the company learned to preheat fuel without a laser, which would have cost more than $100 million. Every simplified component lowers the future plant's cost of electricity.
  6. New Mexico as the first market. The state's governor wants New Mexico to be the first to connect fusion to the grid, and utility PNM is studying it as a future power source. By the company's estimate, the transition would save the state's consumers about $850 million.
