About Helion Energy

Developing magneto-inertial fusion using deuterium and helium-3 with no neutron output, and building the first commercial fusion power plant. Has signed an agreement to supply Microsoft with electricity by 2028.

Helion Energy is an American fusion company, founded in 2013 by four plasma engineers in Redmond, headquartered in Everett. It is building a power plant that draws current directly from plasma, without a steam boiler or turbine: two plasma clumps collide and are compressed by magnets, and after fusion the plasma expands, returning energy directly to the electrical circuit. In 2026, its seventh prototype, Polaris, became the first private device to achieve deuterium-tritium fusion. Its first plant, Orion, is being built under a contract with Microsoft and is due to come online in 2028, followed by a 500 MW project for Nucor. Following a Series G round, the company's valuation reached $15.5 billion in June 2026, with more than $1.5 billion raised to date.

Key highlights

  1. Electricity from fusion at Polaris. The prototype's next goal is to capture part of the fusion energy as current on capacitors. Such a result would be a first for the industry and would settle skeptics' main objection to Helion's design.
  2. Orion launch for Microsoft. The plant is due to come online in 2028 and reach 50 MW after a year of commissioning. According to Axios, Orion may not reach full capacity until 2030, so every construction milestone matters for confidence in the timeline.
  3. A 500 MW plant for Nucor. The project is ten times the size of Orion and is being built at an industrial customer's site rather than for the grid. A successful launch would open up the market of factories with heavy, constant power loads for Helion.
  4. A major deal with OpenAI. According to Axios, the companies discussed selling OpenAI 12.5% of Helion's future output. If signed, the deal would give Helion a second major AI-sector buyer needing hundreds of plants.
  5. In-house capacitor production. A facility is starting up in Everett where people and automation assemble capacitors and semiconductor modules. Volume production of key components lowers the cost of each subsequent machine and removes dependence on outside suppliers.
  6. A standardized plant design license. Helion is pursuing approval granted for the plant design as a whole rather than for each site individually. This would allow identical plants to be built faster and more cheaply, without re-approval from scratch each time.
