About People.ai

Revenue intelligence for sales teams: automatically captures activity from CRM, email, and calendar, updates the deal pipeline, and forecasts revenue. Clients are enterprise sales organizations.

People.ai captures salespeople's emails, meetings, and calls, puts them in order, and completes the CRM with that data. Founded in 2016 in San Francisco. Without such a layer of clean data, no AI sales assistant works at all, and the company spent ten years building it; in February 2026 access to the layer opened through the Model Context Protocol. Founder Oleg Rogynskyy handed over management to Jason Ambrose in a planned transition and remained on the board, and in April 2026 the company relaunched its positioning under the Backstory brand. Current valuation is $1.1B from an August 2021 round; roughly $200M raised over its history.

Key highlights

  1. The wave of agents in sales has made the company's asset scarce. Every major platform announced assistants for sales teams in 2025-2026, but they all run into incomplete and dirty data in the CRM — and People.ai spent ten years building exactly the layer they lack.
  2. The niche is consolidating, and the buyers are now visible by name. ZoomInfo bought Chorus.ai for $575M, Vista took a majority stake in Salesloft at a $2.3B valuation, and in December 2025 Clari and Salesloft merged — the number of independent players with their own technology has fallen to a handful.
  3. The secondary market trades above the last round. Per PM Insights as of June 8, 2026, the premium to the 2021 round price was roughly 18% on $38.25M of bids and trades over 90 days — for a 2021-vintage company whose peers went to deep discounts, that is a notable demand signal.
  4. The change of CEO and name closed a period of uncertainty. Founder Oleg Rogynskyy handed over management to Jason Ambrose in a planned transition and remained on the board, and in April 2026 the company publicly relaunched its positioning under the Backstory brand.
