About Castelion
Designs and is scaling serial production of low-cost, long-range hypersonic weapons, including the Blackbeard system, for the US armed forces. Founded by SpaceX engineers.
Castelion is an American developer of low-cost hypersonic weapons, founded in 2022 by SpaceX alumni, headquartered in Torrance, California. The Blackbeard missile flies at more than five times the speed of sound, maneuvers in flight, and is designed for serial production in the thousands: the company manufactures its own engines and electronics, keeping unit cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Over the past year and a half it has received more than $500 million in military contracts; in May 2026 it signed an agreement with the Department of Defense for production of at least 500 missiles per year, and in September the US Navy issued its first production order. A dedicated factory, Project Ranger, is under construction on 1,000 acres in Rio Rancho with investment exceeding $220 million. In August 2026 the company raised an $800 million Series C in equity at a $13 billion valuation, bringing total funding to $1.23 billion.

Key highlights
- Project Ranger factory. On a 1,000-acre site in Rio Rancho, the company is investing more than $220 million in engine production, test stands, and final assembly. Capacity for thousands of missiles per year covers multi-year procurement and lowers the cost of each unit.
- A path to a program of record. A $90 million Navy contract is preparing the missile for transition into a program of record. That status means a dedicated budget line for years ahead and orders without an annual competition.
- The Army as a second major customer. Blackbeard GL is being tested on HIMARS, the US Army's most widely deployed rocket launcher. Successful trials would open a second budget comparable in scale to the Navy's.
- New launch platforms. A launch from the Saronic Marauder patrol boat in 2027 will give the missile a third launch platform, after aircraft and ground launchers. Each new platform expands the range of programs Blackbeard can compete for.
- Longer-range missiles and defensive systems. After the Series C, the company announced development of longer-range strike missiles and defensive systems. These will rely on the same engines, electronics, and factory lines as Blackbeard.
- Price as an advantage in bulk procurement. In-house production of engines and electronics keeps missile cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. When a customer buys thousands of units, that cost difference becomes decisive in choosing a supplier.
