About Dexterity
Builds two-armed industrial robots powered by physical AI — vision plus tactile sensing — for loading and unloading trailers and containers, picking, packing, and palletizing. Cited customers include FedEx, UPS, GXO, and Sumitomo.
Dexterity is an American maker of industrial robots for the heaviest warehouse work, chiefly loading packages into trailers. Founded in 2017 in Redwood City by Stanford graduates. Its two-armed, wheeled-base Mech robot decides on its own where to place each box, using the Foresight world model, trained on robot actions during real shifts; Foresight already runs across four robot types and five gripper designs. Customers include FedEx, UPS, GXO, Maersk, VF Corporation, and Japan's Sagawa Express. In the summer of 2026, FedEx moved the system from pilot to live operation at a major hub in Hagerstown, Maryland. In March 2025 the company raised $95M at a $1.65B valuation; total funding raised is $291M.

Key highlights
- The entire FedEx network. FedEx plans to automate loading and unloading at thousands of dock doors across more than 20 US hubs. If Hagerstown validates the economics, Dexterity could land an order for hundreds of machines from a single customer, though FedEx hasn't yet disclosed robot counts or timing.
- Japan through Sumitomo. A joint venture with Sumitomo sells the robots to Japanese carriers on a subscription basis. A shortage of drivers and dock workers makes Japan a market where automation pays back faster than in the US.
- New tasks for the same robot. Mech performs unloading, pallet stacking, and de-palletizing without any hardware changes. Each new application sells into an already-installed fleet and raises revenue per machine.
- The world model as a standalone product. Foresight already runs across four robot types and five gripper designs, meaning it isn't tied to Mech. Opening access to the model for a 2026 student competition points to a path toward licensing the software to third-party robot makers.
- Ocean logistics and retail. Customers already include container carrier Maersk and apparel brand owner VF Corporation. These accounts open up industries beyond parcel delivery that also do a lot of manual loading.
- Cheaper fleet maintenance. A single operator can watch over ten Mech units at once, and the arms are rated for more than 10 years of failure-free operation. As the fleet grows, labor cost per box handled falls, and the subscription becomes more profitable.
